Cholera outbreak has hit some communities in Andoni Local Government area of Rivers State.
DAILY POST gathered that 171 cases of the ailment have been recorded with 20 deaths.
The outbreak of the disease was confirmed by the state Commissioner for Heath, Sampson Parker.
Parker said the Andoni Local Government Area Rapid Response Team alongside the state Emergency Response Team have responded swiftly to curb the spread of the ailment.
He disclosed that the state emergency response team and the social mobilization team were also at Andoni to assess and manage the situation.
He further noted that two treatment centers had been established at Ebukuma and Okoli’ile to manage cases, urging the people access the facilities.
While advising the public to remain calm, as the situation had been put under control, the Commissioner directed the drilling of boreholes in the affected areas.
“So far we have recorded over a hundred and seventy casualties cut across ten communities with about twenty mortality and we pray that, that should be the end of mortalities among them.
“I will say the outbreak is under control now. All we need to do now is to continue to treat the affected ones and avert further occurrences. We will continue to deploy our facilities and we have quickly made provisions for portable water for the communities affected”, Parker said.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of the World Health Organization, WHO, in Rivers State, Sylvester Malemi said the organization would ascertain the level of prevalence of the outbreak and subsequently mobilize their team to assist the Rivers State Government.
