Cholera kills 44 in Borno

No fewer than 1, 925 cases of cholera and 44 deaths were recorded within the past one month in Borno. Mostly affected by the epidemic are Internally Displaced persons (IDPs) camps in Muna-garage IDPs camp, Munguno IDPs camp, Dikwa IDPs and Konduga IDPs camp, among others.

Disclosing this to newsmem at an update on Cholera situation in Borno, the Borno state Commissioner of health, Dr Haruna Mshelia said survellance activities were ongoing in all the affected areas to ensure the disease did not spread to other areas of the state.

He added that over 915,000 oral Cholera vaccines were expected to arrive Borno for Cholera vaccination in the state, adding that it was the first of its kind in the history of the country.

Mshelia further said that the Ministry of health in collaboration with the Borno state Environmental Sanitation Agency ( BOSEPA) were working round the camps to ensure that the sanitry situations in the affected areas were improved.

He added that numerous partners, including the World health Organization were working to eradicate Cholera in the state and cure the victims.

“Most affected are the IDPs camps where sanitary condition is poor. We have recorded cases in Mongunu, Jere, Konduga , Dikwa Local government areas including Maiduguri metropolis.

“About 915, 000 oral Cholera vaccines are already on its way to Borno. It is the first kind of Cholera vaccines to be brought to the country. People in all the areas affected by Cholera will be vaccinated beginning from one year old and upwards.

My sympathy goes to the families that have lost their loved ones within the period of the outbreak, even as I urge members of the public to always bring their sick ones quickly to the treatment facilities before it becomes late,” the Commissioner said.
