Chelsea in limbo as Abramovich shelves plan for new stadium

Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, has shelved the club’s £1billion new stadium plans.

The Russian billionaire on Thursday, sanctioned the decision to put all further developments of Chelsea’s home ground on hold.

It was expected that Chelsea would play at an alternative venue, probably Wembley, until the start of the 2020/2021 season, when the new stadium would be ready.

Abramovich has also reportedly withdrawn his application for an investor visa to the United Kingdom, in retaliation to the hardline attitude of the Home Office.

Delays over his latest visa application renewal saw Abramovich miss Chelsea’s FA Cup final victory over Manchester United earlier this month.

And Abramovich is also playing a game of poker over Chelsea’s managerial situation, waiting to see whether Maurizio Sarri’s lawyers can force his exit from Napoli, while head coach Antonio Conte waits to find out his fate.

With the former Premier League champions in limbo, sources close to the club have insisted that it business as usual and the Russian is still committed to the club.
