Chelsea defeat Benfica to lift Europa League

Branislav Ivanovic scored a late, late winner, as Chelsea won their second European cup in two years.

The Portuguese side dominated the opening half of the game, passing the ball around with confidence and having majority of the possession. But for all their invention and incisiveness, Jorge Jesus’ men could not find a goal.

Fernando Torres gave the Blues the lead in the 60th minute, holding off Luisao to round the keeper. Eight minutes later, Oscar Cardozo levelled up from the spot, after Azpilicueta handled in the area.

However, the last word belonged to last year’s UEFA Champions League winners. And it was the Serbian defender who lost his marker, to place his header beyond a static Artur and send the Chelsea fans into ecstacy.

The Stamford Bridge side, joins the likes of Ajax, Bayern Munich and Juventus as the only clubs to have won the Champions League, the Uefa Cup and the old Cup Winners’ Cup.
