Chelsea have confirmed that their offer for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, was turned down.

Sources say the initial offer was £10million cash plus David Luiz or Juan Mata, although the Blues have denied that they included players in the deal.

The Stamford Bridge outfit returned with a straight £22million cash bid for the 27-year-old and it was rejected too, as United warned their League rivals not to return with another bid.

“Chelsea FC can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney,” an official club statement read.

“Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for the avoidance of doubt and to the contrary to what appears to be being briefed to the press in Sydney, the purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United.”

It will be seen in the coming days, if Jose Mourinho will step up his bid to complete a deal for the England international.
