Chef in court over alleged theft of employer’s cooking utensils, foodstuff


A 54-year-old domestic chef, Gaston Hunkpe, who allegedly stole his employer’s cooking utensails and some foodstuff valued at N800, 000, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for stealing.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Nicholas Akpene, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 6, at No. 8, Glover Rd, Ikoyi, Lagos.

He said that the accused, whose address was not given, stole 16 packets of Spaghetti, six bottles of red wine, 48 pieces of Titus Sardine and some cooking utensils.

He said that the stolen items belonged to Mr Soboma Ajumogobia, who reported the matter at the Police Station.

Akpene said the offence contravened Section 285 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the accused, Mrs Mrs Eno Mbanugo, urged the court to grant her client bail on liberal terms.

The Magistrate, Mrs S. K. Matepo granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

She said that the surety must show evidence of tax payment and must be gainfully employed and adjourned the case till Feb. 15 for mention. (NAN)
