Champions League: Why I removed Gareth Bale during 3-1 loss to Juventus – Zidane

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, has explained why he pulled off Gareth Bale at half-time in his side’s Champions League clash with Juventus.

The Frenchman said he took the decision because he wanted “more energy.”

Bale struggled in the opening 45 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu and was replaced at the break by Marco Asensio.

Juventus had pulled two goals back by half-time and scored a third after the restart before referee Michael Oliver awarded a late penalty.

Cristiano Ronaldo converted the spot kick to send Madrid through to the Champions League semi-final.

Zidane explained, “They [Juventus] played a great game, with a very good plan from their coach.

“We had to change the shape of the team, and it changed the dynamic of the game.

“Lucas [Vazquez] and Marco [Asensio] brought more energy, it had to be done.

“But it was not anything against Gareth or Casemiro.”
