Champions League: What Van Dijk said about Messi after 3-0 defeat to Barcelona

Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk, has admitted he is “grateful” not to be facing Lionel Messi every season.

The Dutchman was speaking after Messi scored twice, as Barcelona beat the Reds 3-0 in their Champions League semi-final first leg.

Van Dijk, who recently won the PFA Player of the Year award, was unable to contain the Argentine forward and keep him out.

“When you come up against Messi and he produces his best form you can’t do anything.

“I’m grateful that I’m not in Spain and I don’t have to face him every season.

“He scored two goals and I leave very disappointed. He won the battle but not the war,” Van Dijk told Goal.
