Chelsea captain, Cesar Azpilicueta, has refused to blame Ross Barkley for his penalty miss, after they lost 1-0 to Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Given the chance to level the tie at Stamford Bridge, Barkley saw his effort come off the bar.
Before then, the former Everton man was caught on camera, telling team-mates Jorginho and Willian to back off.
“Ross is one of the best penalty shooters in the team, he is one who takes them. Obviously he wanted to take it – he had the confidence.
“They were encouraging him to have the confidence to score. He was with high confidence to score, so everyone was trying to get him into the best condition.
“It happens,” Azpilicueta told reporters after the game.
