Steven Gerrard’s stunning free-kick was not enough, as Liverpool dropped out of the UEFA Champions League into the Europa League, thanks to a 1-1 draw against Basel on Tuesday night.
The Reds needed a victory at home against the Swiss club, to book their place in the next round of the competition, but fell behind to Frei’s first-half finish. Brendan Rodgers’ men were reduced to 10 men, but their skipper levelled from a dead ball.
Arsene Wenger’s much-changed side gave a good account of themselves in Turkey, by beating Galatasaray 4-1. Lukas Podolski hammered in a 3rd-minute opener, before Aaron Ramsey helped himself to a sublime brace. Wesley Sneijder pulled one back late into the game, but there was still time for Podolski to get his brace.
In the other matches, Monaco beat Zenit 2-0, Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Anderlecht, Olympiakos beat Malmo 4-2, Real Madrid crushed 10-men Ludogorets 4-0, while Juventus and Atletico Madrid ended goalless.
