A former Liverpool midfielder, Graeme Souness, has said that Real Madrid are “tailor-made” for Liverpool and that Cristiano Ronaldo is not to be feared because he does not carry the same influence as he used to. Souness said this after Real Madrid booked their place in the Champions League final last night.
A 2-2 second-leg draw with Bayern Munich in the semi-finals was enough for a 4-3 aggregate win for the Los Blancos.
Jurgen Klopp men can now book a Kiev showdown with Real Madrid later this month should they avoid a second-leg collapse in Rome against Roma on Wednesday having won the first 5-2 at Anfield.
“I think Real Madrid have ridden their luck in both games,” Souness told Ireland’s TV3.
“If Liverpool get there, and I’m sure they are going to get there, I’m happy they’re playing Madrid over Bayern Munich.
“Bayern are a really good team and you factor in the players they’ve got missing, I really fancied them for the competition this year but I think injuries have hurt them at the wrong time.
“And Ronaldo, who has been the major influence at the club for a decade, he doesn’t have that same influence anymore.
“Look at the chances over both games, who had the vast majority of chances? It wasn’t Madrid. They’ve ridden their luck, quarter-finals against Juve and Bayern.
“This is not the Real we’ve seen in the last couple of years. From goalkeeper looking shakier than he’s ever done, to the two full-backs being not very good defensively, to the creative side of things
“I think they’re tailor-made for Liverpool. I much prefer Liverpool playing them than Bayern Munich. I think they’re easier to play against.
“Bayern got up against their back four every time they went up the pitch really and got through their midfield – which is not very good.
“The front three of Liverpool will do a lot better. Chance after chance they created and they weren’t there to take them. If it’s Liverpool, with their front three, they will put them away.”
