Champions League: Owen names three clubs Liverpool should fear to meet

Former Liverpool striker, Michael Owen has named the three clubs the Premier League side should fear in the Champions League after they progressed to the quarter-finals.

Liverpool played goalless with Porto on Tuesday but cruised through to the last-eight, having won the first leg 5-0 away in Portugal.

Real Madrid joined Liverpool in the last eight with an impressive victory over Paris Saint-Germain, while Manchester City and Tottenham can follow suit in their home ties on Wednesday evening.

Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United face Sevilla next Tuesday, before Chelsea travel to the Nou Camp to try their luck out with Barcelona the following day.

Owen, a former England forward, insisted the next round will be a tough ask for Liverpool whoever they draw, but believes three clubs stand out as particularly formidable opposition.

Owen, who also played for Real Madrid, said Manchester City are not one of the clubs Liverpool should fear.

He told BT Sport, “It’s very hard because we don’t know who’s in there just yet.

“They should fear Real [Madrid], Barca and Bayern [Munich], the normal suspects.

“You wouldn’t fancy Man City but then again Liverpool beat them a few weeks ago. They wouldn’t be quaking in their boots [if they drew City], put it that way.

“The big hitters are all there, there was a few comfortable teams in this round but the next one will be tough.”
