Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand and Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard have slammed superstar, Lionel Messi over his poor performance in Barcelona’s humbling at Paris Saint-Germain.
The Englishmen are critical of the Argentine’s lack of action as his side was heavily defeated in the first leg of their Champions League.
Messi-led Barcelona suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss to PSG in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.
Messi’s teammate, Angel Di Maria scored a brace on his birthday to condemned La Liga champions Barca to an embarrassing defeat in Paris, as five-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi hardly had any influence on the game.
And Ferdinand criticised Messi’s display at the Parc des Princes.
He told BT Sport, “His reaction there was poor.
“All night he was sloppy.
“He looked dejected and bereft of ideas, [but] he’s human.”
Also, former Liverpool captain, Gerrard echoed Ferdinand’s comments, saying, “He [Messi] showed zero effort. No reaction all night.”
The Catalan club will attempt to salvage the tie in the return fixture at Camp Nou on March.
