Bayern Munich manager, Jupp Heynckes, has said that his team failed to qualify for the Champions League final because they made mistakes in the second leg.
The Bundesliga champions travelled to Spain trailing 2-1 from the first leg at home.
Joshua Kimmich put them in front at the Santiago Bernabeu, before Karim Benzema scored a brace. James Rodriguez’s equalizer was not enough to take Bayern through.
Heynckes was particularly furious with the second goal they conceded, with Sven Ulreich missing the ball completely, for Benzema to tap into an empty net.
“We are very disappointed. My team played an outstanding game. I haven’t seen Bayern play as well as that for years.
“At this high level you can’t make the sort of mistakes we made after half-time.
“We played brilliantly. I think over the course of the two legs we were the better team, but as so often happens in football the game was decided by the small details,” he told reporters afterwards.
