Following the commencement of the trial of Senate President, Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal yesterday, some Senators have appealed to Saraki to resign from his position so as to save the National Assembly from further embarrassment.
Saraki’s trial for false declaration of assets while he was the governor of Kwara State kicked off yesterday at the CCT.
The Senators made the appeal during a special meeting held at his Maitama residence after the court session in which his legal team failed to secure an adjournment of the case, Vanguard reports.
The report said the Senators were worried over the possibility of Saraki being convicted based on the evidence presented against him during his trial at the CCT.
A Senator who spoke with the newspaper said, “I can confirm to you that at a special meeting held yesterday, we asked the Senate President to consider the option of resignation.”
“We believe that doing so would preserve the institution of the Senate. This was just thrown at him this evening. We believe that he would do the right thing.”
