Carabao Cup: Sarri speaks on Gonzalo Higuain playing Chelsea against Tottenham

Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri has stated that striker, Gonzalo Higuain will not play for Blues when they tackle Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup second leg tie at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.

Sarri confirmed on Wednesday that Higuain’s medical is already scheduled, and if there are no issues, the Argentine international should sign his contract with the West London club before the day runs out.

According to him, Higuain is “close” to becoming a Chelsea player but the 31-year-old will not feature against Spurs in the Carabao Cup clash.

The cut-off point for any new player’s registration was midday on Wednesday, however, Higuain’s loan deal from Juventus has not been done in time for the game against their London rivals.

Asked if Higuain will play for Chelsea against Tottenham, Sarri was quoted by FourFourTwo as saying at a pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon: “Ah, it’s impossible.

“I don’t know [if there will be any problems] because I have to speak with the doctor. I didn’t see him before. Then I have to speak to the club. For tomorrow, I think, it’s impossible.

“I know they have been trying to sign the contract with him today… they are still a few hours from getting it done. We hope he brings goals, that he starts scoring for us.

“He’s also very good at other aspects, other than just goals, but that’s what we are hoping for. He has had some difficulties recently, but we’re hoping we can raise him back to his best form.

“He’s a very strong striker. Especially in my first season in Naples. He did very well. He scored 36 goals in 35 matches in Serie A. That season he scored 39 goals. So he did very, very well. For sure, he is one of the best strikers in my career.

“He played four seasons for Real Madrid, I think. I think he has the right experience to play here.”
