CAN presidency: Association warns individuals, groups not to tarnish its name

Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN has warned individual and groups in the country who are not members of the association to desist from meddling in matters or things of God.

National President of CAN, youth wing, Engr. Daniel David Kadzai, who gave the warning yesterday in Abuja, said that Christian youths will not take it lightly with any individuals or groups trying to tarnish the image of the association.

Reacting to a publication in Vanguard and leadership newspaper recently on the forth coming election of CAN, Kadzai stated that such publications are sponsored, saying that members of the public should disbelieve such publication as it lack merit.

According to the publication, President Muhammadu Buhari was accused of sponsoring a clergy from the Northern part of the country to succeed Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor who is currently the CAN President to avoid any radical opposition to his administration from the Christian community.

He said that the group that came up with the publication is not affiliated with the CAN, neither the convener; Dr Ebenezer Olusola Abednego is a member of CAN, adding that the publication was done for selfish reason.

Talking about the tension in CAN which was alleged by the group as a result of the forth-coming election in July, Kadzai explained that there was no tension in the association, saying that election in CAN is not a new thing as the association has a structure and processes through which elections are conducted every three years.

“CAN has no skirmishes with the Federal Government, they have their own primary responsibility to tackle, while CAN is an association of Christian Churches in Nigeria with responsibilities. We have different responsibilities to carry out” he said.

Kadzai disclosed that for one to be qualified to contest for CAN national President, such individual must be a leader of a denomination, not bellow the rank of a bishop or its equivalent, adding that such person should not be less than fifteen years with his or her denomination.

He added that such person must be a product of a recognized theological seminary and must have a sound fundamental knowledge of Christianity.
