Calabar viewing centre tragedy: Senate Calls on electricity companies to maintain infrastructures

The Senate, Tuesday urged Electricity Distribution Companies across the nation to regularly carry out checks on their installation to forestall tragedies in the future.

The directive follows a motion sponsored by Senator Gershom Bassey representing Cross River South Senatorial district stating that the collapse of high tension cable which killed several youths in Nyangassang community, Cross River state would have been averted, if there was maintenance.

He explained that the incident had national and international reactions, noting that agencies in charge must take steps to forestall future occurrences.

“Mr,. President, distinguished colleagues, I like to note with concern the death of several youths in Nyangassang community in Atimbo area of Cross River state on 22nd April, 2017 while watching football in a viewing centre,” he submitted.

In his contribution, the embattled lawmaker, Senator Albert Akpan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East) maintained that no viewing centre across high tension lines should be allowed anymore.

Matthew Urhoghide on his part, decried the recalcitrance of those desperate to provide accommodation under high tension without taking into consideration the risk. He asked government to move against them immediately.

“In my place in Benin, there are over 200 viewing centres all over the places close to high tension cables with viewers close to 200 each time there are matches. I think this is wrong,” he said.

In his remark, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu ruled that the Committee on Power should invite Electricity management of the affected area for further investigations.
