“CAF did not favour Yaya Toure over Enyeama” – Ikpeba

Victor Ikpeba has insisted that the process that saw Yaya Toure crowned African Player of the Year 2014 was fair.

The Ivorian skipper won the prize for the fourth consecutive year, ahead of local favourite Vincent Enyeama.

Ikpeba says it boils down to how well the individual performed and the clubs they play for.

“It has to do with the clubs which the players play for and their performance for national team from January to December,” Ikpeba told media.

“The coaches have nothing to do with who wins the award. If you play in the right club, definitely you can win the award.

“Yaya Toure is playing with some of the best players in the World. He plays alongside Aguero, Nasri, Silva, Kompany . Besides he is one of the best midfielders in the world.”

Ikpeba, who himself won the prize in 1997, also urged the media to stop sending out wrong messages to football fans.

“The media needs to educate our fans and let people know that it’s not like they (Caf) are favouring the Francophone,” he continued.

“When you see between 1992 to 1999 we won it five times, it has nothing to do with the Francophones been against the Anglophones.

“Our players have to be in the right club, they have to been seen week-in and week-out that they are doing well in the club.

“They have to show to the rest of world that they are doing well in the Champions League and in the Africa Cup of Nations.

“If we see our players winning their domestic league then they have the chance to win the African Player of the Year, Yaya won the English premier league with Manchester City.”
