CAF Champions League: Rivers United throw away three-goal advantage, crash out

Rivers United have been dumped out of this year’s CAF Champions League by Al-Merreikh, despite winning the first leg 3-0 in Port Harcourt.

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side were beaten 4-0 in Sudan on Saturday.

Bakri Al Madina scored a hat-trick for the Sudanese club, as they progressed into the money-spinning group stages of the competition.

Al-Merrikh levelled the tie 3-3 on aggregate in the first half, before Al Madina completed scoring in the second half.

Rivers United now drop into the CAF Confederation Cup play-off round.

Nigeria’s only hope in the Champions League now lies with Enugu Rangers, who must overturn a 4-1 deficit against Zamalek on Sunday, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
