Commercial banks in Enugu State had a hectic day on Tuesday as thousands of customers took over banking premises in order to beat the June 30, (today) deadline for their Bank Verification Number (BVN).
DAILY POST correspondent, who monitored the exercise, reports that the premises of most banks were already crowded as early as 7:00 am.
Security operatives in the various banks had a hectic day controlling the huge crowd at the premises as well as inside the banking halls.
Some of the customers interviewed pleaded with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to extend the date, as anything on the contrary would cut off millions of customers from bank services.
One of the customers, Mr. Mike Okoro observed that “I know CBN has given enough time for this exercise but it should temper justice with mercy by extending the date for at least by one month.
“You can see the huge number of customers here struggling to do this registration. I know the same thing is applicable in other parts of this country”.
Chief Boniface Ogbu, a business man had this to say: “As a businessman, if I did not succeed in registering today and the exercise was not extended, what it means is that my business would suffer.
“Many families will die of hunger and many businesses will collapse in this country if banks deny services to customers who did not register.
“I beg CBN to extend the date in order not to put more Nigerians to suffering given the unpaid salaries in some states”. he said
However, a bank official who pleaded anonymity wondered why customers waited for the last minutes to come and do the BVN registration.
“All these while, banks have been begging customers to come and do this registration but they refused, now it’s about to end and they are begging for extension.
“Nigerians should stop this last minutes rush mentality; it is part of the problems hindering the progress of this country”.
