A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, Taiwo Road, on Wednesday, sentenced a businesswoman, Maryam Idris, 35, to seven months in prison, for defrauding her business partners of N17. 8 million.

Magistrate Emmanuel Ibrahim convicted Idris after she pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, cheating and misappropriation and begged for leniency.

Ibrahim ordered the convict to refund N12 million to the complainants within one year.

The prosecution counsel, Insp. Leo Chidi, had told the court earlier that the complainants, Zainab Usman and Barira Usman Kait, who reside in Ungwan Kanawa, Kaduna, reported the matter at the Ungwan Sanusi Police Station on July 25.

Chidi alleged that the defendant and three others at large introduced the complaints to a group of investors who deal in oil and gas business.

The prosecutor told the court that the complainants deposited N17.8 million into the defendant’s account to transfer to the investors.

Chidi alleged that the defendant and his accomplices fraudulently converted the money to their personal use.

He told the court that all efforts to recover the money failed.

The offence, he said, was punishable under sections 59, 297, 307 and 294 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law 2002, NAN reports.
