A businessman, Sunday Agama, who allegedly impersonated a Nigerian Customs Service Officer, was on Tuesday charged before a Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in Ikeja.

Agama, who resides at Amoo Street, Orile in Agege area of the state is standing trial for forgery, impersonation and stealing.

While testifying before the court, the prosecuting officer, Sgt. Kehinde Olatunde said defendant had on June 1, at Agege committed the offences.

Olatunde told the court that Agama forged custom’s stamp, vehicle particulars and its number plate while parading himself as a customs officer.

“During investigation we found out that the accused is specialised in forging vehicle documents and number plates,” he said.

“He also posed as a serving staff of the Nigeria Customs Service by fraudulently presenting an identity card and passport photograph of himself as a customs staff.”

The prosecuting officer said Agama was nabbed at a check point by the police.

He said, “When he was asked for the receipt and particulars of the car, he was unable to produce the original, so we suspected that the car was stolen.

“We arrested him and got a warrant to search his house and that was where we found the stamp, some particulars of different cars, different number plates were recovered.’’

The prosecutor further stated that the businessman has confessed that he was not a customs officer and that his identity card was forged.

According to Olatunde, the offences contravened Sections 77, 285 and 363 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Agama, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him by the police.

In his view, the Magistrate Mr O.A Aka-Bashorun, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000, with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case to November 11.
