The National Chairman of the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance, APDA, Shittu Kabiru has urged Nigerians to play their parts in making democracy work in the country by voting for their choice candidates.
Kabiru, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, said that democracy was the only form of government that ensured inclusiveness and must be protected.
The chairman said that as the elections approached, Nigerians must realise that democracy had no alternative.
He said rather than truncate the process; all must work towards its sustenance.
He said: ”we should not allow this country to fail. We must make good use of every opportunity we have to prove to the world that we can elect our leaders in a free, fair and credible manner.
”We do not have any other country and democracy has no alternative because it is the only system that has inclusiveness.
”So, Nigerians must not allow anti-democratic forces to derail this process.
”It is time we create more jobs for our young ones and you cannot do that if you do not have a peaceful environment.”
Kabiru urged the international community to work with the country in promoting democracy rather than causing chaos.
The chairman advised them to play their roles as expected in the general elections and avoid utterances that could lead to violence.
”We want to tell the international community that they cannot contain over 100 million refugees from Nigeria.
”They should join hands with Nigerians to allow the entrenchment of democracy.
”For us as a country, we should know that no country is built in isolation. You build countries with friends.
”We urge the international community to join hands with the locals to make sure our democracy works. They are here to observe our elections and should not go outside their stipulated assignments.
”What they need do is to observe, put up documentation so that in the next election we will correct any wrong doing in this election.
”They should not encourage hate speech or send fake news,” he said.
While calling for free, fair and credible elections, Kabiru said: ”we know INEC is doing its best to deliver a free, fair and credible election.
”As Nigerians, we should allow free and fair election. Nobody should snatch ballot boxes.
”When we truncate the process through such an act, we will all bear the brunt including those who perpetrate the act.”
