A former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party and Senator representing Benue North-East Senatorial District, Chief Barnabas Gemade, has stated that the emergence of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as the president-elect has corrected every negative perception some people had about Nigeria.
Gemade made this observation while speaking at the public presentation of a book entitled, “Fragrance of Diversity”, written by the Special Assistant (Media and Communications) to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Noise Ogbuenyi.
The senator-elect recalled how several internal feuds had earlier tried to undermine national peace and security.
He said, “Since 1960, Nigeria has witnessed many costly internal conflicts. The notable ones include the Civil War, Zango/Kataf in Kaduna State, Hausa/Beron in Plateau, Tiv/Jukun in Taraba and Benue, Ebira/Bassa in the present day Kogi, Ife/Modakeke in Osun, Ijaw/Itsekiri in Delta, Ezza/Izzi in Ebonyi, Umuleri/Aguleri in Anambra and Ombatse in Nasarawa.
“In recent years, we have seen the more devastating crises of militancy in the Niger Delta, Boko Haram in the North-East, the Fulani herdsmen and many recurring clashes in the country.
“The crises have, in some cases, snowballed to the extent that not a few people are beginning to be sceptical about the prospects of continuing to exist as one country, if we are capable of building and sustaining peace and unity.”
According to him, a major threat to the unity, tolerance and peace of the nation remained the lack of deep understanding and appreciation of one another by Nigerians.
