Some local government chairmen in Plateau on Tuesday commended President Muhammadu Buhari over his directive ordering the dismantling of checkpoints across the country.
Buhari had on Monday ordered the dismantling of the check points while directing the police to take charge of internal security.
The chairmen, in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), described the president’s directive as timely and a step in the right direction.
Mr Samuel Goar, Chairman of Pankshin Local Government, said that ordering the soldiers back to the barracks would restore their image.
“I believe this action of the president will go a long way in restoring the dignity of the Nigerian soldiers,’’ Goar said.
Mr John Gotau, the Chairman of Kanke Local Government Council, who said internal security was the sole prerogative of the police, commended the president for the directive.
He, however, said the road blocks help in frightening criminals.
Also speaking, the President of Ngas Youth Development Association, Mr Goar Filchak, said motorists would now move about freely.
Filchak said the soldiers often created long queues of vehicles on the highways. (NAN)
