Activist lawyer, Ebun-olu Adegboruwa, has reacted to the invasion of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch office by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police.
This occurred after the NBA vowed to march against the Ambode government as President Buhari tours Lagos on Friday.
The DSS personnel were led by DCP Operations, Lagos State Police Command, Mr A. Mohammed, while Police personnel from the Lagos state command stormed the area in about 25 pick-up vans.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Edgal Imohimi, in a letter, asked the NBA branch chairman, Adesina Ogunlana to turn himself in for “threat to breach public peace”.
Reacting in a terse statement, Adegboruwa said the crackdown on NBA and lawyers was unfortunate.
“It is totally wrong for the police to seek to intimidate lawyers from exercising their freedom of expression.
“Section 39 of the Constitution grants to every citizen, including lawyers, the right to protest.
“I urge the police to exercise restraint in the matter of the NBA protest.
“Nigeria being under the rule of law, let there be no restraint to the democratic exercise of fundamental rights,” he said.
