Buhari
Presidential candidate and national Chairman of the United Progressives Party, UPP, Chief Chekwas Okorie, has thrown his weight behind the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, declaring that he has no issue standing against him to disqualify him from the race.
According to Okorie, who spoke yesterday in Abuja, those calling for Buhari’s disqualification are not patriotic Nigerians, stressing that Buhari is fit to contest the election under the law.
Okorie said since Buhari went through the primary election conducted by his party, the APC, where he emerged winner to become the party’s presidential candidate for next month’s election, his candidature must not be tampered with considering the fact that his party is satisfied with him and is sponsoring him.
The UPP presidential candidate further said that the former Head of State was more democratic and stronger having garnered experience within the 72 years of his life.
“The law is very clear, I am not into the genuineness of his certificate or lack of it because I don’t have all the details but the thing is that he went through the screening of his party, the party has sponsored him to run for president that is what the law says and the law did not allow INEC to disqualify anybody. The law says once a political party has sponsored a candidate, INEC has to publish the qualification of the candidate and that is the much INEC can do and INEC has done that.
“Where the originals of his certificates were not available, he used affidavit as provided by law and now somebody is making a major issue out of it. The law is clear if you feel that the person is not qualified you go to court. Now they are in court, they should stop disturbing all of us.
“But as far as I am concerned, all these about qualification is to determine whether the person has the requisite mental capacity to serve in his office and this is somebody who has been a Head of State and has gone through all the training and short courses to become a general in the Nigerian Army.
“And at the age of 72, I don’t think anybody should be having anything bad against him. During his youthful age, he was not as democratic as he is now. Now he is more democratic,” he said.
Chief Okorie said however that he remains the only person that would win the election without violence, explaining that if the PDP wins, APC will react.
