Buhari commends EU, US for standing by Nigeria during elections

President-Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), yesterday appreciated Italy and other members of the European Union, EU, for standing by Nigeria in the challenging period the nation faced before and during the ongoing general elections.

Buhari, who spoke while receiving the Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Fulvio Rustico, at his Abuja residence, noted that EU countries and the United States, U.S, played key roles in the stabilization of Nigeria in this critically important and challenging period.

While receiving a congratulatory letter from the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella, which was delivered by the envoy, the President-Elect promised to pay attention to areas that will enhance the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Italian President, in his letter to Buhari, congratulated the President-Elect on his victory and commended Nigerians for the peaceful conduct of the elections.

He expressed the preparedness of Italy to assist Nigeria in managing domestic terrorism, drawing from their own experience with internal terror in the 1970s and 1980s.
