Italy’s number one goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, has hinted that he will retire after the 2018 World Cup.
The Juventus stopper turns 38 this week and has represented his country for a record 154 times. He has also made well over 500 appearances for the Serie A champions, for whom he signed in 2001.
Buffon is expected to keep his place at the European Championship in France this summer, but is ready to hang up his boots after the World Cup in Russia.
In quotes carried by Tuttosport, Buffon said: “Am I going to sign a new contract? If we manage to reach the World Cup in 2018 then I’ll press on.
“But after that… I’ll bring down the shutters.”
