A statue of Sir Alex Ferguson, was on Friday unveiled outside Old Trafford, by his wife, Lady Cathy Ferguson. The bronze monument, which stands at 9ft, was made by sculptor Philip Jackson and shows the Scot standing, with his hands folded.

It stands just outside the North Stand, which was renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, to mark his 25th year as the manager of the club.

Former United players like Eric Cantona, Andy Cole, Denis Irwin, Gary and Phil Neville, Bryan Robson, Peter Schmeichel, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Edwin van der Sar and Dwight Yorke were present at the unveiling. Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham sent in pre-recorded tributes, where they showered encomiums on Ferguson.

“It is a proud moment. It has been an incredible journey I have had at the club. I have managed so many great players and it is through them I am here today. They should build a statue for all of them,” Ferguson said.

“They have been fantastic players to have, a marvellous bunch, and I have been very privileged to deal with such great players from 1986 through to today. They have given us all enormous pleasure.

“Normally people die before they get a statue. I am outliving death.”
