President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has reacted to the allegation raised by a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, that members of the National Assembly take bribes.
The Senate president said the comment was embarrassing.
The former INEC boss had during the week said Chairmen of committees in the National Assembly were more notorious for bribe taking antics.
Jega said this in Abuja while delivering a lecture titled, “Peace building and good governance for sustainable development in Nigeria.”
Jega said this in a gathering that included President Muhammadu Buhari; President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.
Reacting At the plenary on Wednesday, Saraki said, ”Going forward, all Distinguished and respected Nigerians should know that if there are cases like this, they should name these people and see what the institution will do to rectify the problem.”- Senate President.
“I think Professor Jega, as somebody who is respected should come out and name these kind of members that he aware of. But if he cannot, he should not come and make such statements.”
“To say what he has said is to suggest that every member of the National Assembly is part of this or even those that are not part of this are colluding in this action — which is far from the truth.”
“Such comments do not help the fight against and it is a slight on this institution, where such a general statement is made. If he has any such evidence, he should bring it forward.”
