However, it was the Costa Ricans who had the best chance in the opening 45minutes, when Celso Borges flashed an effort wide from 15 yards.
With the game looking to end in another draw, Coutinho poked home in the 91st minute.
Neymar also tapped in a second, to hand Tite’s men their first win in Russia.
The South Americans now have four points and take on Serbia in their last Group E fixture.
