In its effort to effectively tackle the problem of flooding, the Borno state Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) said henceforth, defaulters of sanitation laws will be made to face the full wrath of the law.
The General Manager of the Agency, Alhaji Nasiru Ali Surundi disclosed this in his Office, while speaking to journalists about what his agency is doing to control the problem of flooding in Maiduguri and its environs.
He said “Anyone who catches someone dumping refuse in a drainage will be rewarded with N5, 000, while the culprit will be fined N10,000. I believe this will help in controlling dumping of refuse in drainages, which is one of the factors causing flooding in Maiduguri and its environs.”
According to him, the Agency is proposing to send a bill to the state House of Assembly to enact a law, thereby making the Sanitation courts effective. He also added that the agency was also planning to recruit 300 Sanitation Youth Vanguard to enforce the law when enacted.
Surundi also disclosed that the agency had successfully evacuated drainages and refuse dumps across the metropolis. He said that drainages at Bolori, Bulablin Nganaram, Hausari, Shehuri have all been evacuated and that very soon, they will embark on evacuating drainages in Federal low cost area to allow free flow of water.
The General Manager said the agency was ready to partner with other relevant agencies like, the Ministry of Land Survey, Urban Planning Board, NESREA, Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals among others, in order to effectively tackle environmental problems in the state. He pointed out that there was a need for collaboration among government agencies at all levels.
He said the Federal Government had already awarded a contract for the establishment of a N250 million waste recycling plant in Borno, which according to him will help in no small measure in the area of job creation.
