The Borno State Police command has warned political parties and politicians against thuggery and any act that can mar the forthcoming general elections.
The state commissioner of police, Mr. Clement Adoda called on politicians to play the game according to the rule and not to compound the security challenges already on ground.
Adoda, who disclosed this while having a meeting with political party leaders at the police Headquarters in Maiduguri yesterday said the meeting was sequel to their meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba, who directed that they should hold similar meeting with party leaders in their respective states.
He said the meeting was to sensitize political party leaders and other stakeholders on the dos and donts before, during and after the electioneering campaign.
The CP said “as you all know the state is faced with Boko Haram insurgency, we are taking this step to avoid compounding the security challenges the state is facing. As representative of your respective parties, you should preach the gospel of peaceful, free and fair elections”.
He said anybody found wanting will be made to face the full wrath of the law, adding that election was not a do or die affair, as such the police would not fold their arms and see blood flowing.
He assured all political parties of level playing ground, stressing that the police would act within the confines of “public order law” and that they would not allow thuggery in the electioneering campaigns, as thuggery was anti peace.
Responding on behalf of the political leaders, the administrative secretary of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Alhaji Mohammed Mustapha said “the party is happy with the meeting conveyed by the CP. APC is a peaceful party and we would ensure that our party members adhered strictly to the law”.
