Borno state government is planning to pay the registration fees of both WAEC and NECO examinations for Senior Secondary School Students, who are graduating later this year, the state Commissioner for Education, Barrister Isa Buratai has said.

He said in order to reduce the hardship being experienced by parents of the students, who are mainly farmers and traders that lost their means of livelihood to the ongoing insurgency, the state government will settle the registration fees of the students.

The Commissioner, who spoke during a courtesy visit paid on him at his office by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Borno state chapter, said parents may however be asked to pay 25% of the total cost of the registration fees.

Regretting the decay in the education sector in the state, Buratai said arrangements have been made to enable Senior Secondary School students to take extra lessons to prepare themselves for the final examination.

He also urged the visiting NUT members to organize psycho-socio workshops for teachers who were affected by the insurgency while on duty.

Chairman, NUT, Borno Branch, Comrade Bulama Abiso reiterated their plea to the state government for reopening schools within the Maiduguri metropolis.
