Borno Government to build 750 houses for flood victims


Borno state government is to build 750 two bedroom and three bedroom housing units for the flood victims in Damasak, Duji and Tala Ngam and Gashigar villages of Mobar local governments of the state.

Governor Shettima who disclosed this to newsmen in Damasak, the Headquarters of Mabbar local government yesterday while laying the foundation of the 750 housing unit said it was the responsibility of the government to come to the aid of its citizens in times of need.

He said “the construction of 750 two and three bedroom flats is to provide shelter to the victims of the flood in Mobar local government and this is going be done within two to three months. I came here to personally take charge of the projects and I am going spend 3 to 5 days.

The Governor said that already the state government has provided food items, mattresses drugs, sanitary materials, and mosquito nets among other house hold materials to all the camps in the local government.

He stated that government would provide food to those whose farms were destroyed by the flood, stressing that some compensation will also be paid to those who lost their cash crops in the disaster.

Also speaking, the state commissioner of health, Dr. Salma Anas Kolo said that the state government has so far spent N15 million on the purchase of drugs, sanitary materials, mosquito nets and other materials in the four camps within the area.

She said immediately after the flood, medical team were deployed to the camps to provide health care needs in the camps and also forestall out break of any disease in the affected areas.

In her contribution, the state commissioner of Poverty alleviation and Youths Empowerment, Dr. Zainab Gimba said the ministry procured some hydro pump machines to train the youths in bricks making and also to use it to build houses for the victims in the state.

The commissioner stated that over 200 youths of the area have been trained in bricks making and are currently engaged in the molding of blocks that are now being used for the construction of houses to the flood victims.
