Borno State Government says it has succeeded in containing the spread of hepatitis E virus among IDPs in the state.
This is contained in a statement on Wednesday by the Commissioner of Health, Dr Haruna Mshelia,
Mshelia said the disease was reported in three in three Local Government Areas – Monguno, Ngala and Mobbar.
He said the virus was believed to have been spread by IDPs returning from a neighbouring country where they had taken refuge.
“We recorded 10 cases at the period in Damasak,” Mshelia said, adding that other suspected cases were later reported among IDPs in Ngala and Monguno LGAs.
The commissioner said that a total of 457 suspected cases of the disease were reported out of which 39 cases were confirmed through laboratory tests.
“We have not recorded any death so far and all the 39 cases have been put under control,” he said.
He said the ministry constituted Rapid Response Team last June to prevent the disease from spreading.
“On receiving the report, a meeting of the State Rapid Response Team was held on June 15 chaired by myself.
“The team was deployed immediately to Damasak to take proactive measure to contain the spread of the disease. We also adopted similar measures in other areas,” he added.
