The new Chief of Army Staff, Major General T.Y. Buratai has said that with the renewed approach by the military in tackling Boko Haram in the northeast, the war would be taken to the doorsteps of the insurgents until they are uprooted for good.
Buratai, who was speaking yesterday, in Maiduguri also requested and appealed to all and sundry to give the new operation maximum cooperation.
He said, “We will carry the civil populace along. We will also observed the principles of human rights and human dignity. We will not trample on anybody’s right, but as the insurgents have refused to understand and come on the right path, we must force them to make sure that peace returns to all parts of Nigeria and northeast in particular.”
Speaking on the new operation, Buratai said “You will agree with me that this operation has been on for quite sometime. It has transformed from different names. It transformed from Operation Restore Order to Operation Zaman Lafiya. You may want to ask what’s in a name, but I have the belief that it matters a lot. We hope that the renaming of this operation, will bring a new direction, a new vigor and I do believe that enough is enough.
“Consequently, driving from my vision which I unveiled the very day I assumed office as the COAS, which is to have a professionally responsive Nigerian Army in the discharge of its constitutional roles, I have resolved that we must rejig the Operation Zaman Lafiya, it must be transmitted from what it used to be. And I expect all the formations in this operation and indeed all the collaborating agencies in this operation to follow this vision. This is the new drive towards ending insurgency in this country”, he added.
General Buratai also said it is the desire of the Federal Government to end terrorism quickly in the North east and indeed some other challenges in the South- South as well as in the North-central.
