Borno: Boko Haram attacks Bama; killed three, injure eight

No fewer than three persons were slaughtered while 8 others sustained cutlass injuries when some suspected Boko Haram sect members ambushed residents of Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

The incident, according to sources, took place over the weekend when the gunmen stormed some houses and resorted to the use of knives and cutlasses, as using gunshots would attract the presence of security agencies and men of the vigilante youths, popularly addressed as “Civilian JTF”.

Bama, which is about 67 kilometres away from Maiduguri the state capital, is a stronghold of Boko Haram terrorists.

It has witnessed series of attacks and killings, including a coordinated attack on Mobile Police Barracks and some military posts, which led to the death of several security agencies, after which the JTF placed a bounty of N25 million on a top Commander of the sect, Momodu Bama.

A security source told our correspondent that the Boko Haram terrorists have changed their tactics by using knives to slaughter their victims, because they felt using gunshot would attract security agencies and vigilante youths to the scene.

He, however, assured people of the state that they were determined and committed to end the insurgency in the state.

A local resident in Bama who did not want his name mentioned in the print for security reason also told our correspondent that the remains of the three victims have been buried in Bama town according to Islamic rites, while the injured ones have been admitted at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, UMTH, for treatment.

Owing to lack of telecommunication services in Borno State for the past three months, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Gideon Jubrin and the military Task Force Spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa could not be reached for confirmation.

Meanwhile, a nurse at the UMTH confirmed the incident yesterday, pointing out that the 8 victims who sustained injuries were responding to treatment.
