Reports from Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State in the north-east Nigeria say militants who attacked the town of Michika at about 7:00 pm on Monday evening came to rob a bank and steal food.

According to residents, the militants who came in more than 10 trucks attacked and robbed the Union Bank in the area, carting away substantial amount of money and fought their way through military barricades for three hours.

A security source, who does not want his name mentioned because he was not authorized to speak to said, the militants after Michika moved to Lassa town were they engaged in another fight with the military who were pursuing them at about 11:00 pm.

“Soldiers successfully neutralised 11 of the militants and 3 were captured alive, the situation is now calm and people who fled the incident are now returning home,” he said.

Marcus Tumba, a resident who corroborated the claim by security sources in Michika also said, Union Bank in the town of Michika was robbed by the attackers.

“We all slept in the bush, but thank God that the situation is under control. At first, we were told it was an armed robbery operation but later when the gunfire was becoming too much, we realised that, it was the usual Boko Haram attack and we fled our homes.” Tumba said.

Meanwhile, neither the police nor the military in Adamawa has given an official statement on the incident which occurred on Monday night.
