Suspected Boko Haram fighters have ambushed a convoy of the Commanding Officer, 81 Batallion, Nigeria Army at Bulabulin Ngaura along Maiduguri, Damboa road, killing three soldiers and injuring five others sources in the military said.
DAILY POST learnt that the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was said to have been deliberately covered from the press who demanded for official confirmation from the military authorities.
A commercial bus driver who was also caught up in the ambush stated that some soldiers were killed in the ambush with a few sustaining injuries.
A Civilian Joint Task Force leader, Modu Fanammi, also confirmed on Thursday in Maiduguri that three soldiers were killed in the ambush by Boko Haram terrorists.
He said the terrorists, who were in a large number, opened fire on the convoy of the commanding officer of 81 Battalion and five other members of troops were injured in the intense battle that broke out when soldiers engaged the attackers.
Another source said, “the insurgents ambushed an operational convoy of the Commanding Officer (CO) of 81 Battalion, Nigeria Army at Bulabulin Ngaura town along Damboa/Maiduguri High Way where the three soldiers were killed.”
The source added that the Commanding Officer, with other members of his convoy escaped being killed by whiskers, leaving other five soldiers wounded.
He disclosed that two military gun trucks were carted away by the insurgents.
The insurgents were also reported to have set ablaze a military operational camouflage hilux vehicle.
Maiduguri/Damboa road has witnessed several kidnaps and ambushes of both civilians and security personal since the road was reopened by the military last year.
