Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima has said that there are over 70,000 orphans living in Maiduguri and Monguno camps, in addition to about 500,000 internally displaced persons, IDPs across the state.
Shettima was speaking on Saturday, when the joint senate committee on women affairs, primary healthcare and environment paid him a courtesy visit.
Senator Oluremi Tinumbu, who led the joint senate committee, told governor Kashim Shettima that they would visit IDP camps in the state to ascertain the welfare of the IDPs and implement child care programmes for the children.
While lamenting the extent of damage in some local government areas of the state, governor Kashim Shettima also told the joint senate committee that over nine hundred thousand individual houses and public structures had been destroyed by the insurgents.
He said his administration was determined to rebuild the destroyed structures in the state, pointing out that education and job creation would be given priority.
