Boko Haram: Governor Shettima Calls on international community to support rebuilding in Borno

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State has assured that with the rebuilding of destroyed communities in Kaga Local Government Area of the state by the Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (MRRR) the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) will return by January next year.

Shettima disclosed this Thursday during a news conference at the Government House, Maiduguri on the “rebuilding and rehabilitation” of 25 Boko Haram destroyed communities.

He said the ongoing rebuilding and rehabilitation of 616 housing units, police stations and barracks in Kaga council had gulped N580 million.

He also added that the Borno State government was to build 1,000 housing units at Bama town at the total unit cost of about N1.5 billion.

His words: “In Tamsu-Kauw and Makinta-Kururi, we are building 400 units of mass housing; 560 units of houses at Benisheikh for the police station, and barracks, boarding primary school, council secretariat complex, Kamandara Central Primary School, and the district heads palace at Auno.

“All the reconstructed buildings for Jakana police station, the mass housing units at Auno, the General Hospital in Benisheikh are at various stages of completion. We have also sunk four boreholes each in the two villages and at Auno.

“This is in addition to the building of 56 housing units at Tamsu-Kauwa; but we have a long way to go. While there is a will, there is always a way.”

He said the state government, was determined to change the face of Borno State.

Shettima, however, noted: “We are soliciting for your support, the support of international community. The Federal Government has already shown its willingness to assist us; and we are absolutely certain that President Muhammadu Buhari will come in to rescue us.”

On protections of rebuilt communities, he said: “If you have observed, we are embarking on this reconstruction efforts in phases. The whole of Borno, nearly 20 Local Government Areas were devastated by these lunatics. We are largely concentrating now in liberated communities where there is sense of stability like Kaga, Konduga, and Bama councils.

“We can do very little for now in places like Ngala council, including Mafa, Dikwa, Marte, Abadam, Mobbar and Gwoza behind the hills. These areas are a little bit in-secured terrains, while there are ongoing military activities.”

He said the state government did not want to interfere with the ongoing military operations by embarking on those reconstruction and rehabilitation measures to return IDPs to their respective communities.
