Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State in the troubled northeastern state has approved the sum of N20 million for the immediate restoration of water supply to eight communities severely affected by Boko Haram attacks.
These are communities to which persons affected by the Boko Haram conflict have started returning to as peace is gradually restored. They include Gujba, Buni Gari, Wagir, Mutai, Katarko, Jamtari and Garin Itache.
A statement from the office of the Adviser on Media to the governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Bego said, ”the Yobe State Government is working on a comprehensive plan to help people displaced by Boko Haram terror to return to their homes. But for the worst affected people going back to their towns and villages, the first and most basic service they need is access to clean drinking water. This is why the governor approved this money.
“Under the Resettlement Committee set up by His Excellency, Governor Gaidam under the leadership of His Excellency the Deputy Governor, Engr. Abubakar D. Ali, a small sub-committee has been established to administer the funds for the restoration of water supply to the eight communities. They will start work immediately to ensure that potable water is available in the areas mentioned.
“The Resettlement Committee has already undertaken a full assessment of the losses incurred both to public and private property across all areas of the State affected by Boko Haram attacks.
“The assessment is a necessary first step in the effort to rebuild as Boko Haram. The next step is to work towards and coordinate the return of IDPs to their respective communities. This will necessarily entail the commitment of many stakeholders including the federal government and other partners.” The statement reads.
