The Chairman, Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation and former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mamman Nasir has said that the north has detrailed from its tradition of brotherliness and the spirit of accomodation, and therefore, called on political leaders, religious and traditional leaders to mobilise their people for the unity of Northern Nigeria as demonstrated by the late Premier, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto.
The former Chief Justice made the call in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital on Thursday, when the foundation paid a courtesy visit to Governor Kashim Shettima.
He also told Governor Shettima that they were in the state to commiserate with the government and people of the state over the Boko Haram crisis which has claimed many lives and property.
Justice Nasir, who appealed to governor Shettima to mobilise traditional rulers, religious and political leaders as well as community leaders for the unity of the country and the north in particular, said that in his days, the late Premier worked for the unity of the north.
He said in the past, northerners did not see themselves different from one another, as the people of Sokoto see themselves as citizens and indigenes of Kwara or Maiduguri.
He commended Governor Kashim for providing dividends of democracy to the people of the state despite the security challenges facing the state, adding that Shettima is the kind of leader the people need.
While responding, Governor Shettima told the former Chief Justice that Borno was the melting point of Islamic education, as such many people who came in search of knowledge came with their own ideology thus giving birth to the kind of crisis the state has witnessed, affirming that he was not so surprised that the Boko Haram menace erupted from Maiduguri.
