In response to the humanitarian needs in the Lake Chad Basin region, including those related to the growing insecurity caused by Boko Haram, Canada has announced plan to provide more than 26 million dollars for humanitarian assistance in 2016.
Ezinne Uluocha, Public Affairs Officer, Canadian High Commission in Nigeria, in a statement to DAILY POST on Friday, said the financial support “will help to provide food, drinking water, hygiene, sanitation and health services, treatment for acute malnutrition and support for livelihoods for vulnerable populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons and communities hosting refugees.
“Canada’s partners include: the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), CARE, l’OEuvre Léger, Oxfam Québec, Development and Peace, Action Against Hunger and the Norwegian Refugee Council.”
The statement appealed to the countries to put the fund into judicious use, adding that it will continue to stand with them as they make efforts to end the Boko Haram insurgency.
