Boko Haram: Borno Deputy Governor commends Youth Volunteer, JTF

Borno State Government has commenced the massive fumigation and clearing of drainage in areas within the state capital, Maiduguri, previously under the stranglehold of the outlawed Boko Haram sect.

The sanitation came on heels of the call by the state government to all the fleeing residents of the town, who have been held hostage by the outlawed sect, to return to their homes.

Investigations by DailyPost at the weekend showed that the former enclaves of the sect, which were deserted at the peak of the crisis have started showing signs of life as some of the residents who fled the areas have returned.

The areas visited include Budum, Kofa Biyu, Shehuri, Abbaganaram, Gwangbe and Old Jere, which were few months ago totally deserted, desolate and inaccessible to law abiding citizens.

But during a visit at the weekend with the Borno deputy governor, Alhaji Zanna Umar Mustapha and his team to the areas, many people were seen on the streets cheering the august visitors on.

Speaking on the situation, the deputy governor said: “As you can see life has returned to Maiduguri and those that fled these areas, that were dens of the Boko Haram have returned”.

He added: “I cannot but appeal to those that fled at the peak of the crisis to return to their homes as their security is now assured and the insurgents have either been captured or are fleeing”.

The deputy governor praised the effort of the youth vigilante group and the Joint Task Force who have both collaborated to check the excesses of the Boko Haram sect.

He also assured the returnees that the state government would quicken the evacuation and clearing of the drainage and cut the outgrown weeds so that the areas could be again habitable.

Mustapha, who also assured that the vandalized electrical transformers would be immediately replaced, promised that the government would continue to work with both the youth vigilante group and the JTF to ensure that the new ground gained in terms of security was not lost.
