Boko Haram attacks Madagali two times in one week, kills 2

Madagali Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State came under attack of Boko Haram insurgents on Saturday, making it the second time the LGA would be attacked in one week.

It was learnt on Monday that in the Saturday attack, the insurgents killed the village head of Gubla, simply identified by a source as Ali, and a soldier whose name has not been ascertained. The Boko Haram elements had last Monday, February 4, stormed three communities around the Madagali LGA, killing three people and destroying some properties.

A former chairman of the Madagali LGA, Hon Yusuf Muhammed, said Monday that the Boko Haram insurgents who were dressed in military fatigue arrived in two directions and caught the Gubla village head halfway as he was riding to somewhere in a motorcycle.

A member of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Hon Emmanuel Tsandu, who also spoke on the latest attack, said it had added to the February 4 incident to increase the fear of the electorate over their safety when the elections come.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier restricted voting in the LGA to three centres located in Madagali town, Shuwa and Gulak, attributing the restriction to security advice.

Emmanuel Tsandu who is the immediate past deputy speaker of Adamawa State, said Monday that the doubt in Madagali had been whether people would be willing to move from their respective communities to vote in the relatively distant towns where polling units had been placed , but that with the recent repeated attacks by Boko Haram, that reservation had heightened.

“These attacks may reduce the number of people in Madagali who may be willing to come out and vote,” he said.
