Boko Haram: Army explains why residents have not returned to Marte

The Deputy Director, Theatre Command, Operation Lafiya Dole, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu has explained the reasons as to why the people of Marte local government area of Borno state have not returned to their home council despite claim of liberation by the army.

The people of Marte, unlike other local government councils who are at least taking refuge in their local government headquarters have not returned to Marte, which is located at the fringes of the lake chad.

The IDPs who are currently taking refuge in the headquarters of Monguno local government told journalists in Maiduguri that, contrary to the claim by the military, Marte local government as far as they are concerned is not liberated as claimed.

According to them, Marte has been in the hands of the soldiers of Abu Khalifa Albarnawi, the leader of the Abubakar Shekau faction, who is recognised and supported by the Islamic state, ISIS.

However, the Cornel in a WhatsApp chat Saturday morning said, “Good morning. Marte is in my AOR. The reason the indigenes have not been allowed to go back is more because of massive IEDs buried than occupation of the town by Boko Haram.

“Counter – IED Ops is a different thing entirely similar to what was done in Ikeja cantonment. So, it is imperative that news reports are contextualized accordingly. No one gains from misrepresentation of issues.” He explained.
